Finland is expensive—everyone knows that. But that doesn’t mean you can’t save money (and avoid disappointments) during your trip to Lapland. While this winter wonderland is undeniably magical, it can also feel like a tourist trap if you’re not careful. From smart spending tips to hidden gems, here’s how to experience Lapland without breaking the bank.
1. Don’t Skip Santa Claus—But Skip the Village
Visiting Santa Claus is a must in Rovaniemi, but here’s the secret:
Instead of the crowded and pricey Santa Claus Village, meet Santa in Rovaniemi’s city center.
We had no waiting time, visited a charming little cottage, received a free video, and paid €25 less for the official photo (with Santa’s signature!).
2. Souvenirs Are Cheaper in the City
If you want reindeer plushies, handmade ornaments, or traditional Finnish crafts, shop in Rovaniemi’s city center instead of Santa Claus Village.
You’ll find nearly identical souvenirs for €1–2 less per item.
3. Northern Lights: Free (If You Plan Right)
You don’t need to spend hundreds on a Northern Lights tour.
Stay at a hotel outside the city center—we stayed at Motelli Rovaniemi and saw the lights right from our hotel.
All you need is a clear northern view and a Northern Lights app to track visibility.
If you rent a car, drive to a frozen river, bring snacks, drinks, and warm blankets, and settle in for a magical night.
Pro Tip: If you do book a tour, choose one that refunds your money if the lights don’t show.

4. Explore National Parks for Free
Lapland’s National Parks are breathtaking and free to access.
Trails are well-marked with informational signs along the way.
If you don’t have a rental car, book a guided tour that offers hotel pick-up and drop-off.
Savings Tip: Skip guided tours if you have your own transportation—they’re not always necessary.

5. Be Smart at Santa Claus Village
Yes, Santa Claus Village is beautiful, especially at sunset when the lights glow against the snow. But it’s also extremely expensive.
The post office is worth a visit—send postcards with the official Arctic Circle stamp.
Bring your own snacks and drinks to avoid overpriced cafes.
Visit during daylight and after sunset to experience both the snowy charm and the twinkling lights.

6. Transport: Plan Ahead
Public transport in Rovaniemi is limited and unreliable, especially if your hotel is outside the center.
If possible, rent a car—it gives you flexibility and is often more cost-effective for multiple people.
If you rely on buses, check schedules carefully—some routes only run 2–3 times per day.
Final Thoughts
Lapland doesn’t have to drain your savings if you plan smart. Enjoy the magic of Santa Claus, witness the Northern Lights without an overpriced tour, and embrace the natural beauty of National Parks. Remember: It’s not about spending more—it’s about spending wisely.
Enjoy your budget-friendly Lapland adventure! ❄️✨🦌
