10 Days in Finland (Including Lapland) with Just Hand Luggage – Here’s How We Did It

Traveling to Finland in December, with temperatures dropping to -20°C in Lapland, and only bringing hand luggage? Sounds impossible, right? But my friend and I did it — 3 days in Helsinki, 1 day in Kemi, and 6 days in Rovaniemi — without freezing and without overpacking. Here’s exactly how I managed it:
1. The Right Shoes Are Non-Negotiable
Lapland (Kemi & Rovaniemi): I packed Moonboots — essential for keeping your feet warm at extreme temperatures. These boots took up nearly one entire side of my hand luggage, so I cleverly stuffed my underwear inside them.
Helsinki: I wore shorter winter boots, which were warm enough for city strolls and light enough to make my return flight more convenient (by wearing the Moonboots and saving suitcase space for souveniers).
Pro Tip: Bring ski socks for Lapland and thicker regular winter socks for Helsinki.

2. Outerwear: Function Over Fashion (But Still Stylish)
Jacket: I brought one ski jacket that I wore daily. It was warm, waterproof, and versatile.
Ski Pants: Perfect for Lapland’s snowy adventures. For Helsinki’s milder days, I switched to sport leggings.
Hands & Head: One pair of ski gloves was enough. For style and warmth, I brought 2 hats and a balaclava.
Style Tip: If you care about looking put-together in photos, stick to 1–2 neutral colors for your outer layers. I chose a white jacket, black pants, and white/black boots—simple, but polished.

3. Layering Like a Pro
The key to surviving Finnish winter with minimal luggage lies in smart layering:
Base Layers: 5 HeatTech long-sleeve tops from Uniqlo in neutral colors.
Bottom Base Layers: 5 HeatTech leggings, plus one mid-layer for extra warmth.
Mid-Layers: 3 warm sweaters (one in the suitcase, one in my personal bag, and one worn during travel).
Rule of Thumb: Don’t pile on endless layers—it’s about wearing the right layers in the right order.

4. Packing Smart: Maximize Every Inch
Roll your clothes tightly to save space.
Use your boots and hat for smaller items (like socks and underwear).
Wear your bulkiest items (like your jacket and boots) on travel days.
5. Versatility is Key
I wore most pieces multiple times and mixed and matched layers. A neutral color palette made everything cohesive, even in photos.
6. Final Tips
If you want to look stylish, focus on accessories: hats, scarves, and gloves can make a big difference.
Prioritize warmth over everything. No cute outfit is worth freezing at -20°C.
Keep your essentials in your personal item (like a backpack or tote) for easy access during travel.
The Bottom Line
Packing for Finland in winter with just hand luggage is absolutely possible with a little planning and the right gear. Whether you're strolling through Helsinki’s charming streets, cruising on an Arctic Icebreaker in Kemi, or chasing the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, being warm and practical doesn’t mean you can’t also look good.
Happy packing, and enjoy Finland! 🇫🇮❄️🧳
